Dublin Castle

Dublin Castle is an important part in the history of Dublin. Its highlights include the 13th-century record tower, the largest visible fragment of the original Norman castle and the State Apartments.

Actually the capital of Ireland is named after the Black Pool or “Dubh Linn”. It used to be on the place where Castle garden is situated now. The Castle is located in the point, which was rather beneficial from the strategic viewpoint, to be more exact where two rivers meet – Liffey and Poddle. This location helped the Dublin Castle become a good Gaelic Ring Fort. Then there was a Viking Fortress here – you can see it partly at the 'Undercroft'.

Chic quarters of residence for the viceregal court were constructed at that place. At times of Ireland's presidencies of the EU, it is a place of meetings of European Council, Presidential Inaugurations take place here too. Currently visitors are allowed to enter the Chapel Royal, Undercroft. The State Apartments are open for guests too though at some periods they can be closed as they are used for other purposes.
